Under the gentle shade of linden trees and the enduring gaze of José Rizal’s statue, the town of Wilhelmsfeld once again came alive with pride and purpose on June 22, 2025, as the Knights of Rizal Wilhelmsfeld-Heidelberg Chapter hosted its annual commemoration of the Filipino national hero’s birth and his enduring legacy in Germany.
Among the honored guests this year were Maria Renker, author and founder of MRenkerBooks, and her husband Michael Renker. The couple was invited by the Knights of Rizal (KOR) to present Maria's multilingual children’s books at a dedicated stand, an inspiring nod to Rizal’s own commitment to education and literature.
✨ Books with a Mission
MRenkerBooks proudly showcased three of Maria’s widely loved titles:📘 Maria’s Dream Beyond the Stars🌌 Cosmic Lingo🦕 Pastel Dino, the whimsical, family-friendly series illustrated by Maria’s daughter, Ma. Emma Kathryn Aguirre.
Not only did these titles echo themes of curiosity, courage, and imagination, values Rizal championed—they also mirrored his dream of an educated and empowered Filipino youth.
In addition, MRenkerBooks displayed works from other Filipino authors based in Europe, turning the event into a vibrant showcase of Filipino creativity on German soil.
“The youth is the hope of our future.”— Dr. José Rizal
🌍 A Town With a Hero’s Heart
Wilhelmsfeld is more than just a dot on the map, it holds an intimate place in Philippine history. It was here that Rizal, then a medical student in Heidelberg, found peace, friendship, and inspiration to complete parts of Noli Me Tangere. The town honors him with Rizal Park, Jose Rizal Street, and heartfelt annual celebrations organized in collaboration with the local government, Filipino associations, and the Knights of Rizal.
This year's program included a memorial hour, a cultural reception, and reflective discussions on Rizal’s influence on both Philippine society and Philippine-German diplomatic relations, which also marked their anniversary this week.
🤝 With Honor and Unity
The event was graced by the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt, led by Consul General MARIE YVETTE L. BANZON ABALOS, showing continued support for the Filipino community and its cultural ambassadors in Germany.
“It is a useless life that is not consecrated to a great ideal.”
— Dr. José Rizal
Maria Renker’s stories, much like Rizal’s own writings, celebrate that “great ideal”: a life lived in pursuit of truth, identity, and imagination. Through her books and advocacy for Filipino voices in Europe, Maria continues to keep that flame alive, one story at a time.
🌟 In Rizal’s Footsteps
“He who does not know how to look back at where he came from will never get to his destination.”— Dr. José Rizal
With gratitude to the Knights of Rizal, the Philippine Consulate, and the people of Wilhelmsfeld, this year’s celebration was more than a remembrance, it was a joyful reminder that from Heidelberg to the stars, the Filipino story continues.
